Random Musings...
I think about music a lot, anyone who reads this blog knows that. Sometimes, I reflect on certain items of interest and come up with silly thoughts for the mere purpose of starting a conversation, like...
- I will never, ever believe that Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam funded terror cells...
- No matter how hard Marilyn Manson or Trent Reznor try, they will never be as cool as Glenn Danzig...
- The Shins didn't really change my life, but Wilco did, at least in regards to what I expect of music...
- Kurt Cobain was overrated, and the comparison to John Lennon as the best songwriters of their respective generations is insulting...
- In fact, those Neil Young comparisons Eddie Vedder earned in the 90's are pretty applicable, and he's a better singer/songwriter than Cobain ever was...
- I hate that Ashlee Simpson, Avril Lavigne, and Pink refer to themselves as "Punk", when they are anything but...
- I still think Jay Farrar has a good song in him, contrary to what I think about American Central Dust...
- I strongly believe that Sky Blue Sky and Wilco (The Album) stand along perfectly with Summer Teeth and Being There...
- George Harrison's All Things Must Pass is the best Beatles solo album...
- And while we're on the topic of masterpieces, Graham Nash's Songs for Beginners is better than any other album by any other member of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young...
- George Strait and Brad Paisley are alright by me...
- ... but Jack Johnson sucks...
- I think that the arguments that Ryan Adams has never been as good since Heartbreaker or Stranger's Almanac are just silly...
- Bonnie "Prince" Billy is much better on record than live...
- Jimi Hendrix would probably be as lame as Eric Clapton if he were still alive today...
- Which isn't to say that Eric Clapton wasn't once great. Have you ever heard Derek and The Dominos' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs or his debut album? Wonderful stuff, quite possibly the best white blues ever (at least this side of Dock Boggs)...
- Paste Magazine is going downhill, just like Harp did right before the end, when they ran a cover feature on Dave Grohl for president. They were lamely grasping at straws...
- 99 percent of the bands that are featured on music blogs are horrible, but I'm glad music blogs exist, because they've saved me from investing in some pretty crappy bands...
- In fact, the only music blog that gets it right 99 percent of the time is Aquarium Drunkard...
- I would stand on Mick Jagger's coffee table (a la Steve Earle) and proclaim that Rod Stewart was a better singer/performer from 1967 to 1974...
Okay, enough ranting for today.
